CWS Gazette - Spring 2021

Goliath Pours - Challenges and Opportunities

CWS providers have worked some enormous concrete pours – large medical complexes, airport runways, world famous bridges and even an urban development that used a million yards of concrete spread across 17 buildings and the associated infrastructure. CWS providers minimize liability for these high profile builders – they neither want injuries nor the bad press and fines that accompanies washout pollution.

The size of these opportunities can be startling.  One CWS service provider told us that he billed a single builder that operated around the clock for months nearly $500,000 in a single month!

This ten-thousand yard overnight concrete pour required eight washout stations and bins being swapped throughout the night.  Planning, hard work and late hours resulted in a clean, successful pour.

Kiddie pools weren't a good concrete washout solution for Sacramento International Airport.  But CWS bins fit the ticket perfectly.

EPA Enforcement

Picture
Without enforcement of the laws protecting against water pollution generated on construction sites, CWS operators would have an uphill battle. But what does failure to comply with regulations mean for builders? A Boise builder is facing considerable expense and hassle as a result of failing to properly deal with concrete washout (along with other violations).

The unfortunate result is spelled out in a consent decree which is a legal settlement that describes alleged violations and specifies fines.  The accused will incur opportunity costs, legal fees and likely a loss of reputation.  In this case, the draft consent decree (click here to read) calls for fines of $62,000.

News travels fast in construction circles, so CWS service providers should be known to firms that draft SWPPPs, since they often can simply specify CWS by name. Don't miss an opportunity to reach out to builders and specifiers when they are most receptive, such as when fines are fresh in their minds.

LEED's Good Friend - You

Cumulative LEED Registrations

Picture
LEED projects can be a great source of business for CWS operators.  While LEED projects require meticulous documentation, CWS can offer great benefits to builders.  LEED points are accumulated through a variety of means, one being the weight of recycled materials.  Since concrete is so heavy, proper washout recycling can be a very efficient way for builders to gain the prestigious LEED certification. You may just be a LEED builder's new best friend.

Housing Starts

Picture
New house construction has been the "bread and butter" for most CWS operators.  Well, despite a rough start thanks to a certain pandemic and a slow start to this year, most forecasts, including Dodge, call for modest gains of around 5% for 2021. But coming off a massive, unexpected 18% decline last year, there is likely substantial pent-up demand. That's good news for CWS service providers who can be found on the sites of nearly every major homebuilder across the country.
